i mean that if you play music that isn't complex that doesn't mean that the guitar player can't play complex riffs.

Just because a band plays simple music doesn't mean they can't play complex music. Look at john 5 from marilyn manson and rob zombie, in both of those bands the riffs were very simple but he is still an amazing guitarist. Personally I enjoy listening to static-x.
