Mr. Lordi (Tomi Putaansuu) had started recording demos as early as 1991.  It is rumored that one night he dreamt of a concert in which a skeleton was playing on stage.  He saw it as a sign that his band should be a band of monsters.

The Finnish Monster Rock Band, LORDI was formed in 1996.  LORDI was Influenced by theatrical acts such as KISS, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister and WASP as well as various horror movies.  With the use of pyrotechnics, foam latex masks and costumes, the band began to forge it's image.

Note:The band members refuse to be photographed or even interviewed without their costumes.

This was an image that did not sit well within the music industry.  Several recording companies turned them down.  In the eyes of the record executives, a band dressed as monsters should be playing black metal.  Either that or continue
playing hard rock/heavy metal without the costumes.

LORDI was eventually signed but, shortly after the contract, the company collapsed.  The BMG Finland recording company stepped up and accepted them in 2002 and their first single WOULD YOU LOVE A MONSTERMAN? grabbed a lot of attention.  Not long after that, their first album, GET HEAVY, sold 40,000 copies in Finland.  On December 16, 2006, it was announced on THE END RECORDS website that the band had signed on to the label and would be releasing their latest full-length entitled THE AROCKALYPSE on March 20, 2007 with three bonus tracks and a DVD release.

Note:This same album was released in Finland as THE AROCKALYPSE SPECIAL ADDITION.

LORDI represented FINLAND in the EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2006 finals in Athens with the song HARD ROCK HALLELUJAH.  The band won by a significant margin, scoring 292 points, 44 points over second placed Dima Bilan, representing Russia with the song "Never Let You Go".

Notes:LORDI scored the highest number of points for any entry in the Contest to date. They also scored 292 points in the semi-final held two days earlier. They were also the first EUROVISION entrant to win in both the Semi-Final and Final stages.

Lordi were congratulated on their victory by both Finnish President Tarja Halonen and Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen.  To celebrate their victory, LORDI held a free concert in the Market Square in Helsinki, Finland, on 26 May 2006.
President Tarja Halonen of Finland made an official appearance to give Lordi a bronze key flag award for exemplary Finnish work.  The concert was reported to have been attended by over 90 thousand people from all over Finland  and was the biggest public event to that day in Helsinki.

Note:The world record for most people ever to sing karaoke was (successfully) attempted by approximately 80,000 people, singing HARD ROCK HALLELUJAH. The previous record was held by 50,000 Irish rugby fans.

Lordi opened the 2007 Eurovision contest.
