A car salesman in Chicago was canned by his boss after he showed up at work on Monday wearing his favorite Green Bay Packers tie.
Die-hard Pack fan John Stone said his boss gave him an ultimatum when he arrived at Webb Chevrolet in suburban Chicago proudly sporting yellow and green neckwear the day after Green Bay beat the Bears 21-14 in the NFC Championship game.
"He said, 'You have two options,' " Stone told the Chicago Sun-Times. "Remove the tie, or you're fired."
When Stone refused, Webb Chevy manager Jerry Roberts sent him packing.
Roberts stood his ground on the decision, saying Stone's tie selection would have made it harder to sell cars.
"We spend $20,000 a month on advertising with the Bears on [CBS radio] WBBM during the season, and we have Bears players including [Bears defensive end] Corey Wootton driving loaner vehicles, and here was a salesman openly undoing that work," Roberts told the Sun-Times.
Stone told WGN-TV that he wore the tie to honor his grandmother, a huge Packers fan who died recently and was buried last Friday, two days before the big game.
"I was just showing my love for my team and it was a nice, smart tie that matched my clothes — none of the customers minded: They had a sense of humor about it," he told the Sun-Times.
Roberts said no customers complained about the tie and that Stone had been a good salesman since he started a little more than a month ago.
"If he'd worn the tie on Saturday, I wouldn't have minded," Roberts told the Sun-Times.
