Why Ozzfest 2010 had so few bands

If you pay any attention to Chimaira or, more specifically, Mark Hunter, he said a while back "Ozzfest charges 75k to go on tour; Mayhemfest is legit, they actually pay bands" If you remember, Chimaira played on a year besides free-fest. Until something is done about that, chances are that Ozzfest is completely done.

There's the link. Scroll down to where it says "On Ozzfest vs Mayhem Fest".
"how are we not talking about the good ol days of ozzfest??! paying 75k to be on the tour plus the cost of touring!!! RAPE… but bands did it because they so desperately want to feel like their heros growing up must have felt… and they love to play music. mayhem fest – they pay the bands. legit."

If this were true then why would only one person in one band step forward? Sounds more like one band had a grudge that they didn't get the playing time or time slot they wanted. From what I heard it was a shared profit at the end of the tour divided by percentage. If you were the opening band on the show you obviously got the smallest percentage and the main stagers got a much higher cut. The reason Ozzfest is dying (or dead) is most likely that the bands want money up front (System of a Down wanted $350,000 up front to do Ozzfest 2010). The free Ozzfest of 2007 was probably the only year where bands may have had to pay to play.

Every one of the bands on 2nd stage had to come-up w/ $75,000 to get on the fest. Heard it from Norma Jean, Unearth, In This Moment, and Gizmachi. So he's probably just the first person to say it.

Well we are talking about Sharon Osbourne here. Yes she might've gave birth to Ozzfest and made it a hit but, i've heard from multiple people that she has turned into nothing but a money grubbing whore like pretty much everyone these days. Which is why Ozzfest will never be pulled out of the shitter.

Okay first off, leave Sharon alone. Stop blaming everything on her. Second, When a band like Iron Maiden wants $183,000 a night to play. I'm sure what the second stage bands pay goes towards that. And yes bands did have to pay $75,000 to part take in the tour. HOWEVER!!! According to 1 of NILE's guitar techs he said its cheaper to tour OZZFEST then to get an ad in Rolling Stone. Then came System of a Down who indeed wanted $350,000. And again i'm sure some of what the Second Stage bands paid went towards paying them. Then when 2007 came along Sharon was so fucking fed up with all these bands demanding so much money. She said you know what...FUCK YOU! I'm giving you a stage to play and tour that (At the time) was the highest selling tour in America. You should be fucking thankful. That's when she decided to make 2007 for free.
She said she was tired of the Bullshit and politics and wanted band's to step up and say who has the guts to go for free. And weather you liked or disliked the bands that were on that tour for that year...You got to give them props. I talked to In This Moment and they said yeah the only money we made was through sponcers and merchandising...And they loved it. The politics were GONE. Now as for why there were so little bands on 2010... According to a contact at live nation (Who owns the promotional rights to OZZFEST). They wanted to rebuild the franchise again. So start small and gradually work their way back up. Sounds like a good plan to me. But them cancelling in 2011 wasnt a good idea if they are trying to rebuild it. But I hope they come back and I hope it will be fun again (Don't get me wrong I had a BLAST at 2010 ;-)

Well Said! Finally someone else with some sense. I'm not crazy about Sharon but what she has done for metal is more than anyone else. She took Ozzy in the 80's, when Punk, Disco and the arena rock bands like Cheap Trick, Boston, and Kansas put metal to sleep for a while, en route to a 30 plus year career selling over 150 million records/tapes/cd's/mp3's. Then when Ozzy was snubbed by Lollapalooza she created the longest running American music festival of all time to resurrect metal again, this time from Grunge and Gangster Rap. It's so funny to see so many people like metal and have no appreciation for that. She's a tough bitch but a tough bitch that knows what she is doing (most of the time). I don't think anyone else can do or ever will do the work she and Ozzy have done for one musical genre.

its called the Music BUSINESS. we do not do this to LOSE money. nobody has time to hold your hand and walk you through. you learn tough lessons along the way. new bands need to learn it takes money to go on tour. that $75k goes towards paying the very skilled and heavily insured roadies, sound engineers, truck drivers, security, etc... to provide the venue you are being allowed to be a part of. NO ONE EVER MAKES MONEY OFF TICKET SALES ON TOURS. its all about the merchandise and the sponsorships, like Ibanez sez.
but hey, you want all the second stage bands to be paid? your ticket will cost over $200.

Thank You AlpineVallyGirl and MattSabbath13. As much as music is indeed an art. People do forget that its still a business. We don't live in that time where you can go on stage whenever you want. You got to be on stage at a certain time and off stage at a certain time. If you bash the person paying you. There will be consequences. And all bands have to pay their dues. Both literally and figuratively. And I wont be a bit surprised if Mayhem has to start charging their second stage bands. Did you noticed how small the line up is? They claim they are upping the value on the production but I doubt that. I think they are realizing how expensive it is to pay all these bands.

I got your back Ibanez. Even with Motorhead being added the complete list of Mayhem isn't all that impressive. I still may go, but it's not that great. For another point to be addressed, A full album of music from groups doesn't sell. With MP3's and iPod's and all this new technology it's well I like this song but not that one. Instead of buying a cd now you can just buy the songs you like. What does that leave a band with to make real money? TOUR! Anyone who says you sell out if you do this, you're not real metal if you do that, is just a moron. Music is a musicians life. They are entitled to make whatever the hell the want. If they ask for too much, then they'll be put in check and have to ask for a lower price. If I ask for a raise at my job, is that selling out? Or taking a promotion? If that's selling out then hell yeah I'm a sell out. The point is as Alpine said, the music BUSINESS is exactly that . . . a BUSINESS. Anyone calling Sharon a money grubbing whore or any other form of slanderous trash is the pot calling the kettle black. So anyone else who wants to criticize step forward and tell me you would turn down a raise or a promotion. It's the same thing as any band trying to make more bank.

What about what Bruce did to her? He was bashing her family, her tour, and that's ok to you? Despite what you may believe Sharon is a wife and a mother first and a business woman second. She loves her family. When her children were born they took them on the road with them because she wanted to raise them. She has stated publicly that she runs OZZFEST very strict. So that your on stage a certain time and your off stage at a certain time. Every extra minute your on stage that takes time away from another band. And as much as the venue wants you there to bring in money. They want you to get the fuck out. Because they got to clean this whole place for the next load of drunken fans to come in. And when Bruce decided to cut into Black Sabbath's set time. She had every right to cut the power to their set. Hell even Bruce's band mates apologized for his actions. I even talked to some bands who have toured OZZFEST and are Iron Maiden and asked them what they thought of what Bruce did. Like I spoke with Mike from Drowning Pool. And he is a huge Maiden fan but he told me how disapointed he was with him. He said he talking trash to the people who have given us work. Who helped get us noticed. Bashing my country etc. If Bruce wants to do this on his own tour and live with the consequences thats fine...BUT THIS WASN'T HIS TOUR. This is Sharon's. Its her money, her tour, her rules. End Of Story.

If somebody was paying you to go to thier house, would you talk shit about them? It'd be the same principal. What he did was disrespectful, yet he still took the $.

Oh give me a fucking break. Iron Maiden went like 5 minutes later than what they were supposed to, I'm sure they weren't making Sharon go broke. You wanna talk about disrespectful, how about giving a legendary band like Iron Maiden barely an hour to play? Seriously having eggs thrown at him and calling him a prick on stage? Grow the fuck up.
