that's too hard to say.... there are too many highly talented and highly respectable figures in metal.
i would have to go with sabbath for basically spawning all forms of metal

I Coudln't possibly come up with an answer, and still agree with it the following day. I just enjoy too many bands, not to mention 'metal' is a pretty vague description. I guess if I had to pick, these guys would be somewhere near the top of my list:
3 Inches of Blood, Amon Amarth, Black Sabbath, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (I'm not sure if you'd classify that as metal or not, but they're pretty heavy at times, and definatly one of my favorite artists), Symphony X, Therion
