Aside from any Ayreon line up:

Dream Theater - Petrucci is an amazing shredder, Portnoy's one of the best prog drummers, Myung's bass is practically unrivaled, LaBrie has a great set of pipes, and Rudess is one of the best metal keyboardists period. Solid lineup all around.

Individual Thought Pattens era Death:
# Chuck Schuldiner - Guitar, Vocals - Guitar God
# Gene Hoglan - Drums - Fastest double bass ever?
# Andy LaRocque - Guitar
# Steve DiGiorgio - Bass - probably the best bassist ever

Tool because maynard rules hardcore, danny carey rules hardcore, adam jones rules hardcore, and justin chancellor rules hardcore, what do you get when you add hardcore + hardcore + hardcore + hardcore? hell i dont even know, but its  a word that encapsulates something at least hardcore to the fourth power.

im always go with pantera on this. phil anselmo is the greatest frontman in metal history. the man could do it all. dime had the best guitar sound ever. he could more than keep up with other shredders and his riffs are up there with guys like tony iommi, chuck shuldiner and bill steer. vinnie and rex are meh, but with the 2-headed monster of phil and dime, you don't need much else.

No. I like Jazz. I like progressive rock & metal.

The Mars Volta fail miserably at both.
