they ( scientists ) say  that the United States midwest and central Canada could be one of the safest places on Earth if the shit does hit the fan. We are far enough away from the coastline and fault lines ( closest fault is in Missouri)
and there aren't any super volcanos around us ( closest is Yellowstone)....and we have the worlds largest supply of fresh water in the Great lakes....so as long as an asteriod doesn't fall on our head , we( Midwesterners) may be the last people standing if 2012 comes true......I'm sure glad I don't live on an island....those people are fucked......sorry Gnomez

I am a geek for this kind of thing, and check in with the above site often.  surf around on that site and call up the earthquake animations and watch the japanese quakes happen.  there were over 400 in that area just in the last week.  there was a 7.1 a few days before the 9.0 but nobody cared because it didn't do any damage.

I'm from Chicagoland and we've gotten our share of earthquakes, although not earth-shattering.  there's been tons of quakes in the towns of Guy and Greenbrier, Arkansas because some idiots are pumping high pressure water down a fissure, trying to bring up natural gas.  there's also been hundreds of small ones (1.4 - 3.0) along the Mississippi River;  maybe releasing pressure?  maybe building it up?

I'm predicting a bad one in the Cascades region of Oregon.  but it might not happen for years.
