The activity score shows how active you are in the community.  Each time you leave a comment, make a forum post, put up a picture, or just generally participate in the community you get points.  Go here. to see where you stand.

If a user gets banned then they do not show up on the activity score list.  So long as spammers get banned you do not have to worry about them taking your spot in the rankings.
